Forget your denim cutoffs—these four shorts trends are much more stylish.
I'm definitely a creature of habit. From shorts and skirts to dresses and jeans, I wear some type of denim at least five days a week. (Living in Southern California makes it easy to do this, even during the coldest winter days.) Recently, though, I’ve been challenging myself to broaden my style and set aside the denim for a bit. Especially when it comes to shorts, there are so many stylish non-denim choices available right now. One of my colleagues even dedicated a whole article to a particular trend: lace-trimmed satin shorts. While I must admit they do look a lot like pajamas, they’re simply too beautiful not to wear out in public. Brands like Reformation and Old Navy are embracing lace-trimmed satin shorts, and many designers are creating extra-short styles. However, if you prefer a longer option, Free People offers knee-length versions that are perfect. Keep scrolling to shop this trend along with three other favorite non-denim short styles.
1. Summer Suiting
At the moment, I'm searching for the ideal tailored shorts to pair with matching blazers or vests. Veronica Beard is one designer who really embraces this trend—I found at least eight types of short suits on the brand's website.
2. Colorful Nylon Shorts
I have J.Crew Creative Director Olympia Gayot to thank for introducing me to this trend. When she shared a casual mirror selfie wearing J.Crew's Summerweight Nylon Shorts ($151), I knew I needed to add them to my wardrobe.
3. Lace-Trim Satin Shorts
Haven't you heard? Loungewear is making a statement as outerwear. The elegant shorts you once reserved for bedtime are becoming a huge trend this summer.
4. White Linen Shorts
This one is a given. Linen is the ideal fabric for summer because it’s breathable and keeps you cool. I’ll be pairing white linen shorts with white tees for a monochromatic look.
