The Loves of My Life: Karen Gillan

The Loves of My Life: Karen Gillan

The most impactful interviews tend to be the most intimate. In **Loves of My Life**, we delve into the lives of these individuals, posing the essential questions we yearn to uncover—favorite restaurants and places for date nights, the contents of their Instagram Saved folder, their most cherished piece of jewelry, and what lies at the bottom of their handbag. Essentially, we explore their true loves.

Next, we speak with Scottish actress and filmmaker Karen Gillan, star of **The Life of Chuck**, a 2025 American fantasy drama written and directed by Mike Flanagan, based on Stephen King's 2020 novella. Karen is familiar with fantasy and sci-fi, having prominent roles in the BBC series **Doctor Who**, Marvel's **Guardians of the Galaxy** franchise, and the **Jumanji** sequels. We discuss the aspects that inspire her and bring joy amidst her busy film career.

What’s your favorite restaurant in the world?

The Mustard Seed in Inverness, Scotland. What would you choose to order? Any beef dish. Is there something at home you feel particularly sentimental about? A wedding book created by my closest friends filled with our shared memories. What would we find at the bottom of your handbag? A single earring that's lost its mate and some earplugs. Who are the people that make you feel fulfilled? My daughter, husband, and dog. What’s your ideal vacation: beach, pool, city escape, or adventurous? I love a city with its hustle and bustle, though recently I’ve come to appreciate the tranquility of being near water. Do you own a meaningful piece of jewelry? My grandmother gifted me a cross necklace to help me remember her. When I lost it, I was heartbroken, but my husband had it recreated for me. What are five essentials you need in your trailer on set? Water in a glass bottle, nuts, a set of weights, a couch for naps, and something that smells nice.

What’s your favorite pastime? I love to sing to my daughter—poor girl. Best cinema experience in London or your hometown? I watched **2001** on film at the Prince Charles cinema in London. The interval was fantastic. In my hometown, there was a cinema named La Scala, which has since closed. It was my first cinema experience, adorned in red velvet and vintage charm. Do you have a secret date-night favorite? Mini golf. What clothing item could you never part with? A yellow suit jacket dress. It suits me perfectly, combining the best of blazers and mini skirts. What’s your top Spotify track right now—an artist, playlist, or album? Currently, it's The Kinks.

Which city or country inspires you the most? New York City. It's the greatest city in the world with so much stimulation when you step outside, closely followed by Edinburgh, Scotland, with its stunning gothic architecture. What’s your most valued item in your wardrobe? A Louis Vuitton dress I wore to an awards ceremony that I got to keep. It's sparkly, structured, and incredibly fun. What beauty product can you not live without? Eyeliner. I love how it enhances my eyes.

What’s your comfort food of choice? Burgers, with two orders of fries. Name your three favorite movies of all time: **The Shining**, **American Beauty**, **Trainspotting**. If you're in the mood to dance, where would you go? Beauty Bar in New York City. My husband has a knack for identifying when I’m being hard on myself, which is a wonderful realization in those moments. What fragrance do you adore? Dolce & Gabbana, The One. Do you collect anything? Quite the opposite—I'm not a collector and prefer to declutter regularly. I really don't have much stuff. What's your latest fascination? **The Valley** on Bravo.

Coffee, tea, wine, or cocktails—what's your ultimate choice? COFFEE. I adore it. I didn’t have it during my entire pregnancy, and it was the hardest thing to stop. If you could choose only three fashion brands to wear forever, which would they be and why? Monse (the coolest), Dolce & Gabbana (their clothes boost my confidence), and Rag and Bone (a reliable and more affordable choice). Who is your professional inspiration? Stanley Kubrick. Who inspires you personally? My dad. Who are the loves of your life? My daughter, Clementine, and my dog, Turtle. And a special mention for my husband. What is the love of your life? Filmmaking.
