These designer jeans give me the feeling of being an adult with great credit and even more refined taste.
I might be 29, but people frequently mistake me for being 21. I attribute this to my height of five feet and my youthful appearance. Whenever I reveal my actual age, I'm met with the same comment: "You'll appreciate looking young when you're older." Perhaps that day will come, but it hasn't arrived yet. As a result, I've spent years trying to adopt a more mature style. I've discovered that maxi or midi skirts and dresses suit me better than short ones, and long, fitted jeans are far more flattering compared to cropped or baggy options. Still, I continue to seek out new silhouettes and designers. For instance, a few months ago, after hearing rave reviews about Khaite Jeans, I visited their flagship store in NYC and treated myself to a pair that somehow makes me appear taller. Recently, I've also stocked my closet with maxi pencil skirts from Enza Costa and COS. Yet one brand remained on my list of must-tries: Nili Lotan, specifically its denim. Across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Substack (yes, I’m always online), I've seen countless fashion influencers praising Nili Lotan jeans. While many praised the fit, feel, and quality, it struck me that everyone, regardless of body type, looked a bit more polished and put-together in these jeans, which naturally caught my interest.
For those who are unfamiliar, Nili Lotan is a New York designer who launched her namesake label in 2003 after working with esteemed brands like Ralph Lauren and Nautica. Over the last twenty years, she has cultivated her brand around timeless, elegant essentials—pieces that are sophisticated, functional, and luxurious, exemplified by her jeans. All of them are crafted from Japanese denim, a premium, long-staple cotton recognized for its durability and beautiful fading over time. In other words, they are designed to last.
Being easily persuaded but always wanting to experience things for myself, I ventured to Nili Lotan's Tribeca store to try on the brand's top four best-selling denim styles—Shon, Joan, Megan, and Florence. So, let’s take a closer look at how each pair fit and how they contributed to an appearance that I hoped would look more mature.
**Nili Lotan Shon Jeans**
My review: If you're either a longtime admirer of Nili Lotan or just discovering the brand, you've likely encountered the highly sought-after Shon pant. This barrel-leg design has been spotted in the wardrobes of celebrities like Anne Hathaway and Emma Roberts, as well as many fashion editors and influencers. Beyond its celebrity endorsements, the Shon pant is celebrated for its incredibly soft fabric, utility-inspired pockets, and a fit that's both comfortable and flattering. To emphasize its popularity, the brand has an entire section dedicated to the Shon, showcasing various fabric options from wool and cotton to leather, corduroy, and Japanese denim, which I tried on.
Diving into the review, the Shon pant typically runs large, as my attentive sales associate pointed out. I usually wear a size 25 in jeans, so I opted for a 24, although I could have possibly tried a size down with no problem. While the 24 fit me, it sat slightly lower on the waist than the intended mid-rise. I appreciated the uniquely curved silhouette and seam detailing at the knees, which provided a classic barrel-leg appearance while still flattering my figure—an impressive feat for someone who is only five feet tall. I was particularly pleased with how the legs gently tapered at my ankles instead of dragging on the ground. Overall, these jeans are perfect for anyone seeking stylish yet comfortable denim. They are the ideal choice for looking polished with minimal effort.

**Nili Lotan Joan Jeans**
My review: When I asked my sales associate to select the best-selling styles, she paused before suggesting the Joan, cautioning that they might be too long for me. However, knowing they are among the brand's most popular styles, I insisted on trying them on and cuffing them for pictures—and I'm really glad I did. They are indeed long—longer than most jeans I've owned, but in every other aspect, they're almost perfect. Plus, they offer complimentary hemming for all denim purchases. If you buy online, simply bring your jeans to a local Nili Lotan store for adjustments.
The Joan features a high-rise, straight-leg silhouette made from non-stretch Japanese denim, which means they run slightly small. The fit is flattering with a subtly relaxed feel through the legs, and the back pockets sit high, creating a lifted effect. They come in three washes, but for winter, I prefer the dark rinse as it feels particularly chic when paired with my black sweaters and coats. If I had to compare these to another
