I approach boarding a flight as if I'm preparing for a camping excursion. I'm ready for any situation, with all my survival essentials neatly organized. You'll never find me without snacks or realizing mid-flight that I've forgotten my headphones. I've perfected my packing method for personal items, making airport navigation and long flights much smoother. From travel-size toiletries to useful gadgets for in-flight entertainment, I've identified exactly what deserves a spot in that under-the-seat compartment.
If you're uncertain about what to include in your personal item, let me share what I always pack for a hassle-free flight.

1. Tote bag insert
I purchased this tote bag insert years ago after spotting it in a The Everygirl article (my colleagues are the best influencers), and I've used it for every trip since. It completely transformed how I organize my personal item, making it ten times more efficient. With numerous pockets, I can easily access all those small essentials (like lip balm, hand sanitizer, and my passport) without rummaging through my tote.
2. Water bottle
As soon as I pass through security, my priority is to fill up my water bottle. The dry air in airplane cabins makes staying hydrated even more challenging. I always bring my Owala because it holds a good amount of water while being compact enough to fit in my personal item. Plus, the leak-proof lid prevents spills from ruining my travel experience.
3. Passport holder
When traveling internationally, having your passport accessible is crucial, but I avoid tossing it into my bag unprotected. I keep my passport in a leather holder for easy access and protection against spills. I also store all my cards and cash in this holder, allowing it to double as my wallet when I arrive at my destination (thus saving me space in my bag!). I appreciate that it has a button closure, multiple slots for credit cards, and a zippered pocket for coins (especially useful when in Europe!). Additionally, it features RFID-blocking technology so scammers can't scan your information unnoticed.
4. Noise-cancelling headphones
Even if you’re not seated next to a crying baby or a talkative passenger, planes can be quite loud. During flights, I wear these over-ear headphones continuously, even when I'm not listening to anything. The noise-cancelling feature reduces engine noise (and disturbances from other travelers), helping me feel calmer and more relaxed during the flight. Furthermore, headphones serve as a universal signal for "do not disturb," making them a must-have in my personal item.
5. Medications
Bringing necessary medications while traveling is a no-brainer, yet I advise against placing them in checked luggage. Having experienced luggage separation enough times in my life, I ensure my medications are as close to me as possible. I always carry a pill container with my daily vitamins and medications, along with emergency items like pain relievers and Tums, in my personal item. This way, I can keep to my regular dosage schedule even in the air, and avoid panic if my luggage doesn’t arrive.
6. Hand sanitizer
Airplanes are notorious for germs, so hand sanitizer is an absolute essential. I like this Touchland option because it's gentle on my skin (sensitive skin concerns are real) and has a light, pleasant scent. Its bottle design allows it to fit easily into a pocket of my personal item without taking up too much space.
7. Bluetooth audio transmitter
Unfortunately, not all planes have seatback screens, but when they do, I pull out this useful gadget. It plugs into the headphone jack, allowing you to connect your Bluetooth headphones so you can avoid the uncomfortable earbuds provided by the flight attendants while watching in-flight movies.
8. Kindle
I'm known for finishing an entire book on one flight, making it impossible to pack enough reading material for a trip without my Kindle. I can download as many books as I want and read to my heart's content without needing in-flight Wi-Fi. I also love that I don’t have to turn on the overhead light during nighttime flights. Plus, it’s much slimmer than traditional books, making it easier to tuck into my tote bag.
9. Portable charger
There's nothing worse than boarding a flight with a nearly dead phone battery only to find there's no USB outlet available. For long travel days and frequent refreshing of airline apps and Google Maps, a full battery and portable charger are essential. This one is particularly convenient because it comes with built-in cables that connect directly to my devices, eliminating the hassle of extra cords. It's roughly the size of a credit card, making it slim and easy to pack.
