In my modest opinion, stylish nail designs truly shine during the summer months. Don’t misunderstand me; I appreciate a dark burgundy French tip or a simple rhinestone design, but there’s something about the warmer weather that inspires beauty lovers to try new things, leading to some truly impressive nail trends. Think seaglass nails, iced finishes, and mixed berry color combinations—the possibilities for striking summer styles are endless. My latest obsession? The delightful "pill box" manicure. "I’ve been watching this quirky trend of pill box nails for some time now," notes L.A.-based celebrity manicurist Queenie Nguyen in a recent Instagram post, which made me pause everything and take a screenshot for my next salon visit. No, this style doesn’t include actual pills or bottles on your nails (unless you’re the renowned nail artist Mei Kawajiri, who took a literal approach to the trend), and it's actually simpler to replicate at home than a precise French manicure. Keep scrolling to see what I mean.

As illustrated in the photo above, pill box nails feature a mix of high-contrast polish shades divided down the center of the nail. Given the shape and bold color combinations, it closely resembles the lively capsules you'd find in a weekly pill organizer. "It feels playful, a bit nostalgic, slightly retro, and somehow still cool all at once," Nguyen elaborates in her caption. Milan-based nail artist Oksana Zavora would likely concur, as she endorsed the trend a couple of months ago, inspired specifically by the colors in YSL's advertising campaign set in Marrakech. Similar to Nguyen's take, this look incorporates a variety of colorful polishes, but with a few color-blocked accent nails—or "pills."

While this style is definitely a summer trend for 2026, it's not entirely new. Asian beauty influencers have been advocating for colorful nails for years, particularly Korean nail artist Ryu On-yu (also known as Onnu), the founder of Onnu Nail, who is often credited with popularizing the whimsical pill box aesthetic. However, it appears that this bold look has officially made its way to the West, where it's already surpassing the classic colorful French manicure, which features a thin, minimalist stripe at the tip. It’s arguably simpler to achieve on your own, as painting the nails in half is less demanding than creating a precise line.

With tablet-inspired nails, the more color combinations, the better (check below for my favorites!), but if you're aiming for a more subtle approach, you might opt for a single color duo for the entire set. Alternatively, you could follow Nguyen's lead and pair each bright half with a neutral shade—perhaps one with a touch of velvety shimmer if you're feeling adventurous. "The blend of rich colors and softer hues makes the entire set reminiscent of a vintage candy bowl I probably shouldn’t have raided as a child," she shares. Below, explore the tastiest, trendiest color combinations available.
