I see makeup, fashion, and hair as forms of self-expression rather than trying to be universally appealing. I feel like a different person each day, so I allow myself to explore, asking, "Who am I today? Who do I want to be?" Makeup, along with clothing, hair, and nails, possesses such transformative power that my style varies from day to day. That said, I excel at just one or two makeup styles on myself, so when I can’t work with my talented makeup artist, Kale Teter, I tend to repeat the same styles. I adore a cat eye, a smoky eyeliner that gives the impression I just woke up, cream blushes, and a bold lip. Recently, I've been into fluffy brows. I like to switch things up to avoid boredom.
What persona do you feel like today? How did you apply your makeup to embody that?I haven’t applied any makeup today! Unless I'm heading out, I usually don’t do much makeup. A hint of cream blush is my go-to, and I never leave home without lip liner because I like to define my features, but makeup is generally reserved for special occasions. When I do go out today, I’ll likely opt for a smudged tightline eyeliner, fluffy brows, some sunscreen, and that’ll be it.
Is there a certain eyeliner, blush, lip liner, or brow product you love?Lately, I’ve been styling my eyebrows with soap. For years, I convinced myself I had very thin eyebrows, only to realize they tend to gather in the center. Using strong soap for my brows (any soap works, even regular household soap), I achieve a more defined brow. I really love Urban Decay’s 24/7 Gel Eyeliners; they work wonderfully. I often do a black smoky tightline during the day paired with a bit of mascara, giving that “I just woke up like this” look that I love. Urban Decay has beautiful brown lip liners such as 1993 and Hidden Truth; I’m a fan of that ‘90s cool-toned, effortless lip.
I haven’t yet found my perfect blush. Sometimes I use lipstick as blush or whatever is handy in my bag. I tend to reach for whatever's closest, but if you have any suggestions for deep, cool-toned berry cream blushes, I’d appreciate it!
Oh, that’s definitely my vibe too, so I have some recommendations to share. We should discuss it later.
I was going to say, “Text me!”
(Image credit: Courtesy of Dove Cameron)You were blonde for much of your life and mentioned that you're done with bleach. I must say, you look fantastic as a brunette. Has your new hair identity influenced other aspects of your beauty routine?I feel like I can wear more makeup now that my hair is darker and contrasts with my fair skin. When I was blonde, everything could look quite heavy. Now, I can play with makeup more freely. I’ve had to emphasize my brows because if I don’t, my features tend to get lost. Since my eyebrows are lighter than my hair, I fill them in much more. Naturally, I’m a cool-toned blonde like Amanda Seyfried, so skipping brow filling just doesn’t work for me.
I’m sure there's someone with more color theory knowledge could explain this better, but I couldn't wear any berry shades when I was blonde as they overwhelmed me. Now, I can wear more intense lip colors which is great for expression.
Additionally, just to clarify something I mentioned before: I might go blonde again in the future, though I'm not counting down the days. Regarding eyebrows, I thought I had fine, unhealthy hair, but I only realized later that my constant bleaching hindered its growth. I’m now enjoying healthier hair without bleach, but I do get bored; I might become Targaryen blonde again someday. Let's not box ourselves in!
