From ancient Greece and the Roman Empire to Kate Moss and Sienna Miller in the early 2000s, gladiator sandals have fluctuated in popularity throughout the years. And let’s not forget the memorable pair Pattie Boyd wore in the '60s while married to George Harrison. Personally, I haven't owned a pair since my beloved gold Steve Madden gladiator sandals wore out around 2012, but I'm starting to feel it's time to revisit this trend. Ever the fashion icon, Michelle Obama recently showcased the type of gladiator sandals making a comeback for 2026. At the opening event for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, the former First Lady wore Jimmy Choo Ayla Flats ($895) paired with Ossou's Sienna Top ($495) and Trace Jeans ($295). I'm not particularly fond of the knee-high gladiator sandals that resemble a baseball catcher’s shin guards, so this minimalist design is more to my taste.
