From ancient Greece and the Roman Empire to the early 2000s with Kate Moss and Sienna Miller, gladiator sandals have seen fluctuations in popularity throughout the years. And let's not overlook the memorable pair Pattie Boyd donned in the '60s during her marriage to George Harrison. I personally haven’t had a pair since I wore out my cherished gold Steve Madden gladiator sandals around 2012, but I believe it's time to revisit this trend. Fashion icon Michelle Obama has just showcased the type of gladiator sandals making a comeback for 2026. At the opening event for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, the former first lady wore Jimmy Choo Ayla Flats ($895), paired with Ossou's Sienna Top ($495) and Trace Jeans ($295). I'm not particularly fond of knee-high gladiator sandals that resemble baseball catchers' shin guards, so this minimalist design is perfect for me.
