From the times of ancient Greece and the Roman Empire to the early 2000s with icons like Kate Moss and Sienna Miller, gladiator sandals have seen fluctuating popularity throughout the years. And let's not overlook the memorable pair Pattie Boyd showcased in the '60s while married to George Harrison. I haven't owned a pair since I wore out my cherished gold Steve Madden gladiator sandals around 2012, but I’m beginning to think it might be time to embrace the trend again. Fashion trendsetter Michelle Obama recently showcased the type of gladiator sandals that are making a comeback for 2026. At the opening event for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, the former first lady donned Jimmy Choo Ayla Flats ($895) paired with Ossou's Sienna Top ($495) and Trace Jeans ($295). I’m not particularly fond of the knee-high gladiator sandals that resemble baseball catcher's shin guards, so this more minimalist style suits me perfectly.
