      At a private atelier located just a block away from Place Vendôme, you will discover the most intricately designed press-on nails to ever be created. Produced by Mellerio—the historic jewelry house that once adorned Marie Antoinette—each set boasts an open mesh structure embellished with white diamonds, black diamonds, or colorful gemstones. Depending on the design, the cost can exceed $2000 per nail ($2070 for the pinky, $2645 for the index and middle fingers, and $3220 for the thumb). Truly, these are exquisite press-ons.

      Luxurious, indeed, but nail jewelry isn't a novel concept. Mellerio patented these ornaments back in 1951, although they didn’t see commercial production until their official launch during Paris Haute Couture Week. Years later, Jules Kim, a DJ turned jewelry designer, began crafting her own nail rings after being captivated by Mellerio's historic nail designs during a trip to Paris. By 2008, her iconic serpentine nail-shaped ring, which wraps around the fingertip, was launched and was quickly worn by Beyoncé in her "Sweet Dreams" music video. London-based jewelry designer Jessie Evans has been providing reusable 18-karat gold nail charms adorned with diamonds and sapphires for several years, while celebrated manicurists like Betina Goldstein and Tom Bachik have used precious stones for custom red carpet nail designs.       "I believe we are witnessing a broader evolution in luxury," says Laure-Isabelle Mellerio, creative director of the maison, about this transition. "Jewelry is becoming more expressive." For instance, colorful gemstones and convertible lariat necklaces were prominent at the 2026 Couture Jewelry Show, highlighting a desire for pieces that represent individuality. And what better way to express your personal style than with distinctive nail art? "Consumers no longer see these worlds as distinctly separate," Mellerio adds. "They perceive them as complementary forms of self-expression." The jewelry industry has been venturing into new areas for some time, showcasing unique and functional pieces that emphasize craftsmanship. Ponytail cuffs, brooches, belts, and bag charms—innovative, heirloom-like designs are becoming increasingly common. "Jewelry has expanded beyond traditional placements," agrees Kim. "Nails are a natural extension of that." Even those with an extensive collection of fine jewelry might be in search of unexpected ways to display it. Enter the realm of finger embellishments.

      The nail sector has also experienced significant innovation, particularly with press-ons. Press-on nails of the past were often bulky, limited in design, and generally unreliable. Losing a diamond-studded nail while opening a car door or washing your hands was a concern. Today, the market has exploded with elegant, reusable options that rival salon manicures in both design and durability. For instance, Mellerio's nail ornaments utilize adhesive tabs typically used for regular press-ons. Yes, your standard stickers are sufficiently high-quality for these exquisite sets. "This ensures they are securely attached while allowing for easy removal without harming the natural nail," explains Mellerio. "They can be comfortably worn for an evening, a special occasion, or even several days." Naturally, with the presence of precious stones, careful removal is advised. A mixture of warm water and dish soap generally works well, although Evans's reusable charms can handle acetone.

      Now, you can embrace this trend without spending thousands of dollars on diamonds. Sparkly nails remain a staple in the beauty realm through the use of Swarovski crystals, metallic studs, or even nostalgic adhesive rhinestones (think Kylie Jenner!). You can create a sophisticated manicure similar to how one might replicate trending jewelry designs with costume pieces rather than investing in couture. Nonetheless, these luxury nail accessories are quickly transitioning from a trend to a staple category, redefining what it means to indulge in a manicure. "I plan to continue educating on how to use [and] wear these pieces and help everyone feel comfortable with the concept," says Evans, as she develops new designs and materials. "Keep an eye on this space." Fast forward 75 years, and fine-jewelry nail accessories could very well be as timeless as the tennis bracelet. As Kim puts it, "it’s simply another place on the body for jewelry to reside."
