Looking for Seriously Glowing Skin? Here’s Your Expert Guide to Exfoliating Acids.

If you've ever found yourself standing in front of a skincare shelf, trying to decide whether to choose glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or another option entirely, you're not alone. Exfoliating acids can indeed be perplexing, and if you're not accustomed to using them regularly, incorporating one into your skincare routine might feel daunting. Let's be real—using the term acid in relation to your skin can be intimidating. Furthermore, since there's no universal method for exfoliation, the situation becomes even more complex.

The positive aspect is that you don't need to possess a chemistry degree to determine which acid suits your skin—we've put together an extensive guide to simplify the process for you. Different acids function in various ways; some are better for addressing breakouts and congestion, while others target dullness, uneven texture, and pigmentation. The focus should be on selecting one that works harmoniously with your skin, rather than just choosing the most potent formula available. (Believe me, I've been there.)

Ahead, we consulted with Dr. Ahmed El Muntasar, GP, aesthetics doctor, and owner of The Aesthetics Doctor, for insights on the benefits of adding exfoliating acids to your skincare routine. We'll also outline the three primary categories (AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs) and highlight key acids within each, along with product recommendations, so you can figure out which ones are best for you.

      ### What Are Exfoliating Acids?

Exfoliating acids are essentially chemical compounds that assist in breaking the bonds between dead skin cells and living skin, enabling more effective removal. “Instead of relying on physical scrubs, exfoliating acids facilitate more even cell shedding, resulting in smoother, brighter skin, improved texture, and gradually a more uniform skin tone,” Dr. El Muntasar explains. Additionally, depending on the acid used, they can help unclog pores, reduce breakouts, soften fine lines, and enhance the absorption of other skincare products.

If you're feeling unsure about where to begin, here’s some good news: Dr. El Muntasar notes that exfoliating acids are among the most well-studied and effective skincare ingredients, provided they are used properly. “The biggest mistake people make with exfoliating acids is overdoing it too quickly,” Dr. El Muntasar says. “Many try to combine multiple exfoliating acids with retinoids, vitamin C, and physical scrubs, thinking it will yield faster results. However, this often leads to irritation, dryness, and damage to the skin barrier.” He recommends starting slowly—once or twice a week—and gradually increasing usage if your skin tolerates it well. Also, daily SPF is essential since freshly exfoliated skin is more susceptible to UV damage.

      ### Who Should Use Exfoliating Acids?

Due to the broad range of products available, most individuals should be able to locate an exfoliating acid that works for them. However, Dr. El Muntasar points out that they might not always be suitable. “If your skin barrier is compromised, you have an active eczema flare, dermatitis, or significant irritation, I would usually recommend focusing on repairing the barrier before introducing exfoliation,” he advises.

For those with sensitive skin, he suggests that you don’t have to completely avoid acids, even if you have rosacea or sensitivity; instead, opt for gentler acids (like lactic acid or PHA), ease into them, and use them less frequently. “Stronger isn’t always better,” Dr. El Muntasar explains. “A lower-strength product used consistently often yields better long-term results than an aggressive treatment that leaves the skin inflamed.”

Each exfoliating acid has its unique benefits, and Dr. El Muntasar emphasizes that “the best acid really depends on the specific skin concern you want to address rather than assuming one is universally superior.” With that thought in mind, let's explore the three main types of exfoliating acids—AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs—discussing their functions, ideal skin types, and the top products to consider from each category.

      ### Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

AHAs are water-soluble acids that primarily work on the skin's surface, loosening the bonds between dead skin cells and promoting shedding for smoother, brighter, and more even skin. They are particularly effective for concerns such as dullness, rough texture, and uneven skin tone. "Glycolic acid is great for addressing dullness, pigmentation, and fine lines due to its small molecular size, which allows it to penetrate effectively, while lactic acid is a milder option that attracts moisture to the skin, making it suitable for those with dry or sensitive skin," Dr. El Muntasar notes.

      #### Glycolic Acid

The smallest AHA molecule, glycolic acid penetrates effectively, making it one of the more potent exfoliating acids, ideal for tackling dullness,
