Ford's 110th recall of the year addresses defective rearview cameras. The recall affects over 1.4 million vehicles due to an unauthorized modification that may cause the camera to display a distorted or blank image. While the majority of the recalled vehicles are Edges, 365,000 Mustangs are also included. After surpassing the 100th recall mark in August, Ford continues to progress with this recall involving 1,456,417 vehicles from the 2015 to 2019 model years that have the faulty rearview cameras. The investigation revealed that a sub-supplier for Magna made an unauthorized alteration to their printed circuit board header tooling, resulting in reduced terminal contact forces. This diminished force led to “fretting corrosion on the terminal header over time.” Ford has been aware of these issues for more than a decade, receiving its first warranty claim on May 6, 2014. Since then, the company has logged 44,123 warranty claims worldwide and 195 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires related to the problem, alongside at least 18 reported accidents, though no injuries have been documented. The recall affects a variety of models, including the 2015-2018 Edge, 2015-2017 Expedition, and 2017-2019 Econoline, as well as the 2015-2019 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 trucks. Other affected models include the 2015-2019 Mustang, 2019 Ranger, 2016-2019 Transit, and 2015-2018 Transit Connect, with some Lincolns also impacted, such as the 2015-2019 MKC and the 2015-2017 Navigator. The majority of affected vehicles are Edges, with 515,004 units involved, in addition to 365,041 Mustangs and 138,038 Expeditions. For affected owners, dealers will assess and replace the rearview camera as needed, using a new camera that features an updated PCB header with greater terminal contact forces that are not prone to fretting corrosion. However, the use of the term “will be produced” raises concerns, and the NHTSA has indicated that interim notification letters for owners will be sent out later this month. Additional letters will be distributed once a solution is available, so owners should remain vigilant in monitoring their mirrors in the meantime.
