Who Requires a New Workbag? I Evaluated the Longchamp Le Pliage Bag to Determine If It’s Suitable.
(Image credit: Kerane Marcellus) For the Gen Z corporate enthusiasts, I understand how challenging it can be to find a dependable, everyday workbag, particularly one that is budget-friendly. A brand that has repeatedly come to mind, especially after rebranding to attract a younger crowd, is Longchamp. As part of the generation that brands look to for style validation, I’m aware of what's trendy. Longchamp has established itself as a premier name in leather goods, offering everything from passport holders to wallets and midrange luxury handbags. The price point of their workbags caught my attention. While browsing their site, I discovered the Le Pliage bag, which debuted in the ’90s and was designed by the founder’s son, Philippe Cassegrain. Le Pliage translates from French to “the fold,” reflecting the bag's flexible nature. (According to the site, the bag can be folded down to the size of a paperback book.) Additionally, this style is crafted from recycled canvas, making it an eco-friendly alternative, all priced under $200. It seemed too good to be true, so I had to see for myself. I reached out to the Longchamp team to see if I could sample one. I requested the Le Pliage in a medium size, large enough to accommodate my laptop. I chose the British Green color to diversify my usual black bag and add a daily splash of color. I used it at the office and elsewhere with all my essentials. Was it a suitable workbag? During my first year in New York, cotton canvas tote bags were ubiquitous. I recall that they were generally uncomfortable when carrying a laptop and other heavier items (which I often do) and challenging to maintain cleanliness. Since then, I’ve preferred leather bags. However, this tote is distinct from the typical cotton variety. Its quality is significantly more durable and structured despite being pliable. After unfolding the bag, which indeed resembled the size of a small paperback book, I loaded it with my laptop, a book, and other essentials into its spacious interior. Inside the bag, there are two pockets: a small one for loose items like keys, lip gloss, cards, and change, and a slightly larger one where I placed items like hand sanitizer or my phone. One concern I have regarding bags is thin straps, as they usually dig into my shoulder, leading me to avoid them. However, the straps on the Le Pliage bag did not cause discomfort, even when I filled the bag and carried it all day on my left shoulder. The two long straps are also sufficiently lengthy to wear over a sweater or jacket, which is useful when the weather turns cooler. For those who prefer a handbag style, the Le Pliage is also available with shorter straps. The bag's design is thoughtfully crafted, a detail I noticed as soon as I unfolded it. It features a zipper closure and a gold snap clasp for added security—essential if you live in a bustling city like mine. I’ve lost countless small items, like cards and keys, while using bags without closures. This added precaution made me feel more secure during my daily subway commute and while navigating the city. After work, I typically stop by a nearby grocery store to avoid multiple trips on the train. This bag is spacious enough to fit a few small, sealed food items and supplement bottles, ideal for someone like me who's always on the go and prefers to limit the number of bags carried on the train. Additionally, since the bag is made from recycled polyamide canvas, which is nylon, it's easier to clean compared to heavy cotton canvas totes. As a matcha enthusiast who tends to spill, the waterproof quality of nylon was a bonus for daily use. Pros: Affordable, sustainable, durable, extra closure for security, mostly waterproof, easy to clean, easily stored, foldable, stylish, and functional Cons: I have no complaints, but if you need a larger bag, the large size is also a good choice. My Final Thoughts The quality of this bag far exceeds its price; it’s truly a bargain. As a Gen Zer growing older and (hopefully) becoming more financially savvy, I’m cautious about splurging, as I consider future expenses. Aesthetically, the green color paired with the brown leather feels perfect for the approaching fall season, and the other color options are equally attractive. The Le Pliage is comfortable to wear, accommodates
