I Adore NYC Fashion: This Is How the City Is Shaping, Defining, and Leading Style Trends in 2026

Pritika Swarup serves as an editor in residence at Who What Wear, is an international model, a philanthropist, and the founder and CEO of the acclaimed beauty and wellness brand Prakti Beauty. New York City is and will always remain a pivotal center of the fashion industry—there's no question about that. As an international model, philanthropist, and beauty brand entrepreneur, I consider myself fortunate to participate in the city's key fashion event each year: New York Fashion Week (NYFW). It is a vibrant and dynamic hub of trendsetting and cultural innovation. Cameras click away, attendees hustle between showcases, and hair and makeup professionals perform their artistry amidst the frenetic backstage activity. It represents a condensed version of style, expression, and timeliness in real time. Although two months have passed since NYFW, its impact on current fashion trends is clearer than ever.

While other major fashion weeks (London, Milan, and Paris) possess their unique vibes, I find NYFW particularly distinctive. It is the sole non-European segment of fashion month, offering a platform for cultural and aesthetic interplay. It showcases a diverse array of global viewpoints, merging uptown elegance with downtown boldness. Elements like food, nightlife, wellness, and politics all converge on the runways. Thus, it stands as the ultimate fusion point of high and low fashion.

In my view, the essence of New York style can be encapsulated in one word: contrast. In NYC, fashion thrives on this principle, and perhaps the greatest tension exists between the millennial-endorsed quiet luxury aesthetic and the Gen Z–inspired maximalism. These seemingly opposing styles can coexist in New York, energizing the current trends that will carry us into 2025 and beyond. In the following sections, I will explore both aesthetics in depth and share my favorite designers who embrace both styles. I’ll also provide insight into how I plan to merge them to create the most stylish NYC It-girl outfits. Let's dive in.

      Quiet Luxury

The so-called quiet luxury aesthetic has dominated the NYC fashion scene in recent years. It emphasizes neutral tones, impeccable cuts, and understated wealth—anything that signifies success and timeless elegance. While NYC has always been associated with power dressing, this style found its peak significance following the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s understandable that, in unpredictable times, individuals would gravitate towards investment pieces that promise long-term value. Given broader lifestyle trends—such as a focus on wellness, slow living, and thoughtful consumption—the quiet luxury aesthetic is not merely understandable but also anticipated.

In my opinion, Altuzarra exemplifies a key voice within the quiet luxury arena. Its designs incorporate all the right ingredients, showcasing sharp tailoring, a calm color palette, and a sense of timelessness. This resonates with myself and many others, especially in an era defined by overexposure, where restraint conveys power, stability, and longevity.

      Maximalism

Gen Z–driven maximalism stands in contrast to quiet luxury. It celebrates vibrant colors, prominent logos, striking details, and eclectic layering. This aesthetic is rooted in NYC's downtown culture, particularly its nightlife, and can be seen as a direct response and rebellion against minimalism in fashion. To me, it isn’t about excess but rather about an uninhibited expression of one's identity and individuality—something undoubtedly reflective of New York.

Prabal Gurung stands out as a master of maximalism. He employs bold color palettes (ranging from soft pastels to deep jewel tones) and grand silhouettes (hand-pleated and fluid draping). During his spring/summer 2026 show, I observed voluminous gowns, sculptural details, and cultural narratives woven throughout the collection. He skillfully balances structure with softness, creating designs that are both dynamic and emotive. His work demonstrates that maximalism doesn’t necessarily equate to chaos; instead, it can be both orchestrated and deliberate.

The Clash, the Contrast, and the Coexistence

Despite sitting on opposite ends of the style spectrum, both trends meaningfully coexist in NYC fashion. Designers blend aspects of both, incorporating maximalist touches on minimalist bases (like vibrant fabrics shaped into simple silhouettes). This approach bridges the generational gap, enabling quiet luxury-loving millennials to experiment with color, texture, and cut while encouraging maximalism-oriented Gen Zers to invest in simpler, more timeless shapes.

One of my preferred methods of merging these two aesthetics is by donning balloon pants, which I have seen at Michael Kors, Brandon Maxwell, and other labels. I believe this micro-trend exemplifies the unity between both styles. They provide a sculptural, maximalist volume while remaining wearable in classic materials like leather, silk, and chiffon.

I’m continually impressed by how New Yorkers blend comfort and practicality with bold experimentation and proportion. This observation applies not just to designers but to street style as well. Street style serves as a genuine barometer of fashion and embodies the essence of New York
