I Ignore Fashion Rules—Here’s How I Perfected the Technique of the "Slightly…
Blanco Miró Scrimieri serves as the Editor in Residence for Who What Wear UK and is a stylist based in Barcelona. She is the founder of the fashion brand La Veste and co-founder of the sunglasses line Delarge, with her proficiency spanning design, creative direction, and brand development. While you might recognize Miró from her partnerships with luxury fashion brands, it’s likely that her unique street style and outfit curation have drawn you to her Instagram account. When she isn't at fashion week or working behind the scenes at La Veste, she can be seen showcasing elegant tablescapes at @blanca_a_table.
I’ve never been particularly drawn to outfits that appear to be perfectly "correct." You know the type: everything coordinated, everything balanced, and the colors "make sense." While that's nice, I find myself becoming bored after a bit. What truly captivates me is when there's a slight flaw—like an unexpected color, socks that don't exactly match the shoes, or a very classic skirt paired with something youthful, or a formal "lady" bag alongside something sporty or a little disheveled. That slight tension is what brings an outfit to life for me. When things are overly harmonious, the result can feel dull, but the addition of a small element that disrupts the balance instantly infuses personality into the look.
I often view getting dressed as a playful daily task. I begin with something quite classic, such as a striped shirt, a simple skirt, or a knit, and then I ponder, "What could introduce a little disturbance?" Maybe it’s bright red socks teamed with brown loafers, or lime green alongside purple, or a very chic belt paired with nearly casual trousers. The aim isn't to appear eccentric—in fact, it’s the opposite. I enjoy it when the "off" element gradually feels like a natural part of the ensemble, almost as if it has always belonged there.
Much of this stems from blending styles from different decades; I’ve always enjoyed mixing pieces from various eras, like combining a '70s inspired item with something from the '90s, such as a vintage silk skirt with a large cotton sweatshirt, or "proper" leather shoes alongside whimsical socks. These minor contradictions create a sense of energy.
Color is where I tend to experiment the most. I’ve always been drawn to color pairings that are somewhat surprising at first, like red with pink, green with blue, yellow with brown, or purple with almost anything. When the colors are bold but the shapes remain classic, the outfit feels balanced. Then there's my fondness for socks! They're perhaps the simplest way to introduce a hint of the unexpected into an ensemble.
A splash of color between shoes and trousers can dramatically alter the vibe. Suddenly, something very traditional feels fresher, lighter, and more whimsical. For me, this approach also makes fashion feel less daunting. You don’t require an entirely new wardrobe; you just need to reconsider what you already own and start experimenting with it in new ways. Shift one item, introduce one color, or bend one rule.
Occasionally, the most intriguing outfits come together when something almost doesn’t fit, yet somehow, collectively, it does. That's usually when I realize I truly like it.
