"Lived-In Beauty" is the defining makeup trend of the summer, and these styles demonstrate it.
Choosing the most defining beauty aesthetic of the 2020s can leave many feeling overwhelmed. Over the last six years, beauty microtrends have captivated us collectively. We have witnessed the emergence and fading of trends like glass skin, latte makeup, boyfriend blush, skincycling, and siren eyes, with each trend given a catchy name for social media appeal. This continuous cycle of TikTok-driven aesthetics has made it challenging for any single trend to truly stand out. However, when you take a step back from the hashtags like #glazeddonutskin, #milkymanicures, and #slickedbuns, it becomes apparent that most of these mini-trends share a significant commonality: they all contribute to the clean-girl aesthetic. It’s hard to deny that the "clean girl," marked by her polished skin, well-groomed hair, and minimalist makeup approach, has become the emblem of beauty standards in the 2020s. Yet, striving to meet the high expectations of clean-girl minimalism has become burdensome, especially in the summer. Our tolerance for maintaining seemingly flawless skin, frizz-free hair, and perfectly applied makeup is wearing thin. This summer marks the end of the clean girl era as we’ve known it.
For summer 2026, while much of the streamlined aesthetic remains—glowing skin, groomed brows, and blushing cheeks—the looks prioritize "imperfection." Skin radiates with a glossy sheen, eyelashes are bold, and cheeks are brushed with rose-tinted blush to create a sun-kissed effect. Hair is left to the whims of humidity, embracing a carefree summer vibe. This season, beauty looks are more lived-in.
Makeup artist Marie Bruce demonstrates this approach with Givenchy Beauty.
Buttery cream blushers are being swapped for vibrant powders in rich, sunlit shades to achieve a convincing flush. Skin is prepared with a hydrating base for a shiny and dewy complexion (a broad-spectrum SPF lotion is ideal). If you prefer coverage, choose a serum-based foundation that emphasizes glow.
The secret to this look lies in the application of blush. Shifting away from the typical placement of blush on the high points of the cheekbones, the goal is to contain the color to the central third of the face. Using a fluffy brush, apply rich-toned blush from the tops of the cheekbones, over the apples, and across the nose.
Finish off by brushing through the brows for a soft, fluffy appearance, curling the lashes, and applying a soft-focus balm to the lips for a carefree summer look that only improves throughout the day.
The beauty of this lived-in summer makeup trend is that it transcends the boundaries of no-makeup makeup. Bold looks also embrace gilded finishes, deep black lashes, luminous, candlelit skin, and striking lips.
For the eyes, opt for shimmering bronze, long-wear pigments that glide on easily and set firmly. In the evening, deepen the crease with matte brown shades for a light, smoky effect. To enhance lash volume, use ultra-black mascara at the roots and sweep it through to the tips, selecting a formula that offers 24-hour wear to minimize heat-related smudging.
Achieve a candle-lit effect without sacrificing glow by applying high-performance powders lightly over a skincare-infused foundation. Concentrate powder application on the outer edges of the face and along the T-zone, allowing the natural skin glow to shine through where it counts.
No summer beauty ensemble is complete without gloss; new formulas provide a wet-looking finish that hydrates lips without stickiness. Choose tinted shades for a just-bitten look, paired with dewy skin and minimal additional products for an everyday look that allows for easy reapplication.
The finishing touch to any lived-in summer makeup look? A delicately clumped lash (achieved by layering mascara and letting it dry between applications) complemented by a subtle wash of shimmer on the eyelids that sparkles in the warm sunlight.
While blush may form the core of a clean-girl beauty look, bronzer is what truly elevates lived-in beauty aesthetics. Opt for buildable formulas enriched with glow-enhancing pigments and apply generously to the hairline, beneath the cheekbones, along the chin, down the neck, and over the décolleté, finishing with a light dusting on the nose.
For an effortless, maximalist approach to bronzer, keep the eyelids bare to shift focus to the lips. Select bold shades in long-lasting matte finishes for a striking look that stays put.
