      For inflamed folliculitis or true acne, Khorana suggests using a body wash that contains benzoyl peroxide. She explains, "A body wash with benzoyl peroxide can help eliminate bacteria on the skin and is often effective for inflamed or pustular breakouts." I often suggest leaving it on the skin for a minute or two prior to rinsing to enhance its efficacy, but it’s important to note that benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels and clothing if not rinsed off properly. Another ingredient I frequently recommend is salicylic acid. Khorana states, "Exfoliating ingredients like salicylic acid keep follicles clear by dissolving oil and debris within the pores," while AHAs such as glycolic acid and lactic acid "gently exfoliate and improve skin texture over time." If the bumps are actually keratosis pilaris rather than acne, she advises using urea-based body lotions, stating they are "excellent for softening rough, bumpy skin and diminishing keratin buildup." I also encourage clients to opt for fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizers to aid the skin barrier without clogging the follicles.
